Aftertaste Cafe in Haebangchon, Seoul Review: Flat White, Financier and Watermelon Granita

Aftertaste is a cozy independent cafe and bar located in Haebangchon, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, South Korea. It is situated in the wider Noksapyeong and Itaewon area, a neighborhood known for its hillside streets, small restaurants, bars and distinctive cafes.

📍 Cafe: Aftertaste
📍 Address: 1F, 2 Sinheung-ro 23-gil, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, South Korea
📍 Area: Haebangchon, near the Noksapyeong and Itaewon district

My companion and I visited Aftertaste on an extremely hot summer day. We were not particularly hungry, but after walking through Haebangchon, we wanted iced coffee, air conditioning and a light dessert.

The final verdict was surprisingly simple: the coffee was pleasant, the watermelon granita was disappointing, and the complimentary financier was the best item of the day.

What We Ordered

Menu Price
Iced flat white KRW 5,000
Decaf option Additional KRW 1,000
Iced cafe latte KRW 5,000
Watermelon granita KRW 8,000

We also received a complimentary financier from the owner. It was not part of a receipt-review event, sponsored promotion or blogger benefit. The owner simply offered one financier to each table to thank the customers for visiting despite the intense summer heat.

Why I Chose a Flat White

I normally do not enjoy coffee with strong acidity. Some coffee drinkers appreciate bright, fruity or citrus-like notes, but when coffee tastes too sour to me, I often leave it unfinished.

Before ordering, I asked the staff whether the beans had noticeable acidity. I was told that the coffee was not completely free from acidity, so I deliberately chose a flat white rather than an Americano or straight espresso.

Milk can soften some of the sharper characteristics of espresso, creating a rounder and smoother overall flavor. The iced flat white was therefore a reasonable choice for my personal taste.

Tip: If you strongly dislike acidic coffee, ask the staff about the bean profile before ordering. A milk-based drink may feel more approachable than black coffee.

A Note About Decaf Coffee and Caffeine Sensitivity

I ordered the flat white with the decaf option, but I still had difficulty falling asleep that night.

It would not be scientifically accurate to conclude that this coffee definitely caused my insomnia. Sleep can be affected by stress, physical condition, daily routine and many other factors.

However, decaffeinated coffee is not necessarily completely caffeine-free. The residual caffeine level may vary according to the beans, decaffeination process, serving size and brewing method. People who are highly sensitive to caffeine may therefore still want to avoid decaf coffee late in the afternoon or evening.

Warm Hospitality from the Moment We Entered

The most memorable part of the visit was not the coffee. It was the hospitality.

The woman working at the counter also served the tables, and she was exceptionally friendly. As soon as we entered, she greeted us by saying something like:

“It must have been very hot on your way here.”

The air conditioning was already cool and comfortable, but the warm welcome made the experience even better. It felt as though the staff had genuinely noticed how exhausting the summer weather had been.

The first few seconds after entering a cafe, restaurant or clinic can significantly influence how a guest perceives the entire experience. Good service is not merely about using polite words. Tone, timing, facial expression and genuine attention all matter.

A Small Lesson for My Clinic in Seoul

I am a physician who operates Springday Clinic Seoul Sinchon-Hongdae, an aesthetic medical clinic serving both Korean and international patients in Seoul.

This short interaction at Aftertaste made me think about the way patients feel when they first enter a medical clinic.

A warm welcome cannot replace medical expertise or careful treatment, but it can help a patient feel less tense before a consultation or procedure.

At my clinic, I try to welcome patients personally, check whether they are experiencing pain or discomfort during treatment, and communicate carefully rather than treating each appointment as another item on a production line.

The Complimentary Financier Was the Best Item

A little later, the owner brought one complimentary financier to each table.

We had not promised to write a review, and this was not a receipt-review promotion. She simply said that she wanted to thank everyone for visiting on such a hot day.

The financier contained small nutty pieces that looked like almonds, although I could not confirm the exact menu name or flavor.

The outside was lightly firm with a rich buttery aroma, while the inside remained pleasantly moist. It paired especially well with the milk-based coffee.

The financier was easily the best thing we ate that day.

I immediately regretted not ordering financiers from the beginning. If I visit Aftertaste again, I would pay for the financier before considering any other dessert.

Watermelon Granita: Disappointing for KRW 8,000

Unfortunately, the watermelon granita was the least satisfying item for me.

The portion was much smaller than expected, and the flavor felt fairly ordinary. Taste is subjective, and someone looking for a light and icy summer dessert may enjoy it more than I did.

For me, however, the serving size and flavor did not feel proportionate to the KRW 8,000 price.

“I should have ordered two financiers instead.”

I Originally Wanted Mango Bingsu

I had originally planned to order mango bingsu, but it appeared to be unavailable or out of season during my visit.

The remaining bingsu options appeared to include chocolate and peach. I enjoy peaches, but I already had boxes of yellow and white peaches at home, so paying for another peach dessert felt unnecessary.

Chocolate bingsu sounded too sweet for my mood, which is why I eventually chose the watermelon granita. In retrospect, it was not the best decision.

Interior and Atmosphere

The cafe itself was cool, clean and comfortable.

The wood-toned interior felt calm rather than overly decorated, making it a pleasant place to rest after walking around Haebangchon.

I particularly liked the handwritten menu. Instead of a standardized printed menu board, it looked as though the items had been carefully written by hand in a notebook.

This small detail made the cafe feel personal, thoughtful and independently operated.

Final Verdict

"Another huge plus is the gorgeous, clear view of Seoul's Namsan Tower right near the cafe!"

Flat White A reasonable choice for someone who prefers milk-based coffee and wants to soften some acidity.
Financier The clear winner and the dessert I would definitely order next time.
Watermelon Granita Refreshing but disappointing in portion size and value for my taste.
Service Warm, thoughtful and one of the main reasons the visit remained memorable.
Atmosphere Cool, comfortable and suitable for a relaxed break during a Haebangchon cafe walk.

My recommendation:
Visit Aftertaste for coffee, order a financier, and enjoy the calm wood-toned atmosphere. I would personally choose the baked desserts over the watermelon granita.
